When the Enemy Comes in Like a Flood…

It is not news to be told that the enemy has already come in like a flood. This is a fact which is all too obvious on every hand. We have become literally engulfed with a satanic flood of moral and spiritual degeneracy unparalleled in modern times. Liberal church leaders are bolder than ever before in their denials of the Christian faith. Evangelical leaders accelerate their tragic compromises with apostates, Roman Catholics and Charismatics. Many churches, once established by godly fundamentalists and known for simple, powerful Bible preaching and godly living, have substituted worldly programs and psychological techniques in an effort to survive this "flood."

Pornography is being defended (even by many church leaders) as "freedom of the press," while those who seek to expose the purveyors of moral and spiritual filth are silenced by men and women who desire to legalize and glory in immorality. Public education has degenrated into a humanistic, psychological brainwashing, and parents who seek to protect their children against such ungodly influences become the targets of legal action by the powers that be. Yes, the enemy certainly has come in like a flood.

However, true believers must not forget that God has given us a special promise for days as these. The Bible says, "When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him." This is the promise of God—and God cannot lie.

This being true, why, then, are so many believers living discouraged and defeated lives? Why are so many giving up the battle and becoming neutralized even while the conflict continues to rage?

The answer is very clear. The enemy who comes in like a flood is Satan. The Bible tells us that believers are not ignorant of Satan's devices (2 Cor. 2:11). But, it may be that believers have forgotten about Satan's devices. The devil is a liar and a deceiver. He is busier than ever promoting doubt, discontent, discouragement, dissension, double-mindedness, and disobedience. He delights to entice believers into walking by sight rather than by faith. And when believers walk by sight, the appearance of the "flood" overwhelms them.

Therefore, let us not forget that the Word of God is still the Sword of the Spirit. The Bible itself is the standard God raises up when the enemy comes in like a flood. True believers will rally around that Standard. They will lift it high and obey it faithfully and refuse to listen to Satan's lies.

True believers will move forward in confidence, having been assured of victory in Christ Jesus (1 Cor. 15:57-58). They will value obedience above sacrifice, faithfulness above success, and God's approval above man's approval. They will know that they are in the midst of a flood, but they will not be afraid of it. They will be willing to suffer persecution, imprisonment, and even death. But they will never compromise. — M.
